The Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels started on May 25th 1782 with the so called Windsor Gallery.Sergeant Major Ince had the idea of digging the tunnel all the way to the area called Notch, an inaccessible natural platform on the north side of the Rock, to install cannons there to aim at the Spanish positions on the isthmus, an idea Governor Elliot approved of and encouraged.

Armed with sledgehammers, perforated crowbars and with explosives, 18 men excavated a tunnel 25 meters long in five weeks. After the Great Siege construction went on, with rooms like St George Hall, with seven loopholes for cannons. The Building of the network of tunnels continued during later periods and especially during the second world war. There is an aproximate extension of more than 50km in lenght.
